ASTOPU, Aba Zone Launches Mass Tricycle Riders Registration in Support of INEC CVR Exercise
The Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU), Aba Zone, has commenced a large-scale registration exercise for tricycle riders in Aba, drawing widespread participation from operators and members of the public as part of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
The initiative, which recorded the turnout of hundreds of tricycle riders and other eligible residents, was carried out under the leadership of the ASTOPU Aba Zone. The exercise aligns with efforts to deepen civic participation and ensure more citizens are captured in the national voters’ database.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were physically present at the busy Ngwa Road by East axis in Aba, where they facilitated the registration process and guided participants through the enrollment procedures.
The exercise transformed the usually busy commercial corridor into a civic engagement hub, as tricycle operators paused their daily activities to participate in the registration process. Many members of the public also joined the exercise, taking advantage of the accessible on-the-spot registration arrangement.
According to organizers, the initiative is part of ASTOPU Aba Zone’s broader commitment to encouraging political awareness and strengthening participation in democratic processes among transport workers, who form a significant portion of the urban workforce in Aba.
The event also highlighted the growing collaboration between grassroots unions and electoral authorities in expanding voter access, particularly in densely populated commercial areas where many eligible voters often struggle to reach registration centres.
ASTOPU leadership expressed satisfaction with the level of turnout and cooperation from riders, describing it as a positive step toward greater political inclusion within the transport sector in
Abia State.
