Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos Announces Death of Monsignor Gabriel Osu at 72
The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the passing of Very Rev’d Monsignor Gabriel Osu, a respected cleric and longtime communications director of the Archdiocese, who died on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 72.
The announcement, which surfaced online on Monday, revealed that the late Monsignor Osu was born on Sunday, September 5, 1954, and hailed from Ogbego Quarters in Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Monsignor Osu was ordained into the priesthood on Saturday, December 5, 1981, and devoted decades of service to the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Lagos. Throughout his priestly ministry, he served in several notable parishes and institutions, earning admiration for his commitment, humility, and dedication to evangelism and church administration.
Among the places he served were the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos; St. Gregory College, Ikoyi; St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oshodi; St. Paul Catholic Church, Ebute-Metta; and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.
Beyond parish assignments, Monsignor Osu also played a significant role in the media and communications arm of the Church, serving for many years as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications. His contributions helped strengthen the Church’s engagement with the public and the media landscape in Nigeria.
Until his death, he was resident priest at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Lekki.
A circular issued by the Archbishop of Lagos disclosed that funeral arrangements for the late cleric would be announced in due course.
The Archdiocese called on the faithful and the general public to pray for the peaceful repose of Monsignor Gabriel Osu’s soul and for divine comfort for his family, friends, parishioners, and all those mourning his passing.
