From Bangui Prodigy to Africa’s Youngest Mathematics Ph.D Holder: The Extraordinary Academic Journey of Dr. Hallowed Oluwadara Olaoluwa, the Nigerian Genius Who Earned Four First-Class Degrees Before Age 20
Dr. Hallowed Oluwadara Olaoluwa has continued to earn recognition across Africa and beyond as one of the continent’s most exceptional academic minds, emerging as the youngest Ph.D. holder in Mathematics in Africa and one of the youngest doctorate holders in any discipline on the continent.
Born on September 27, 1989, in Bangui, Central African Republic, to Nigerian missionary parents from Ekiti State, Dr. Olaoluwa displayed uncommon intellectual brilliance from an early age. His educational journey became remarkable after he reportedly completed both his primary and secondary education with four double promotions, a rare academic feat that immediately distinguished him among his peers.
At just 14 years old, he successfully passed the French Baccalauréat in Sciences, the equivalent of Advanced Level examinations, becoming one of the youngest individuals to achieve such a milestone in the Central African Republic at the time.
Driven by an extraordinary passion for science and mathematics, he proceeded to the University of Bangui where he accomplished what many described as nearly impossible. He simultaneously enrolled in and completed two full Bachelor of Science degree programmes in Mathematics and Physics.
In 2007, at only 18 years old, Dr. Olaoluwa graduated with First Class Honours in both Mathematics and Physics. His outstanding performance earned him the prestigious All-Time Best B.Sc. Student Award in the Department of Mathematics as well as the Best B.Sc. Student Award in the Department of Physics.
Not satisfied with breaking records at the undergraduate level, the young scholar continued his academic dominance by simultaneously pursuing two separate Master’s degree programmes in Mathematics and Physics at the same university. The achievement was considered unprecedented at the University of Bangui, as he became the first and only student to successfully complete both programmes concurrently.
In 2008, at the age of 19, he graduated with Distinction in both M.Sc. Mathematics and M.Sc. Physics. Once again, he emerged as the Best M.Sc. Student in both departments, further cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s brightest academic talents.
His pursuit of excellence later took him to Nigeria’s prestigious University of Lagos, where he specialized in Functional Analysis with emphasis on Fixed Point Theory. In January 2014, Dr. Olaoluwa completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the age of 24, graduating with a perfect CGPA of 5.00/5.00.
His doctoral performance earned him the Overall Best Graduating Ph.D. Student Award at the University of Lagos for the 2012–2013 academic session, alongside recognition as the Best Ph.D. Graduate in the Engineering and Sciences category.
Dr. Olaoluwa’s brilliance soon attracted international recognition. He received an offer for the prestigious Master 2 Mathematics programme at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), France, one of Europe’s renowned institutions for advanced scientific research.
He later advanced into global academic circles as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University’s Department of Mathematics between 2015 and 2016, where his research focused on quantum ergodicity in mathematical physics. His growing influence in scientific research also earned him selection as a Next Einstein Forum Fellow, a platform dedicated to promoting Africa’s next generation of world-class scientists.
Over the years, Dr. Olaoluwa has received several awards and recognitions celebrating his extraordinary academic accomplishments. Among them are the Ekiti State Merit Award in 2014, the Youngest Ph.D. Holder in Africa of the Year Award, the Young Achievers Award presented by the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation, and the Award of Excellence as the Youngest Academic Achiever in Nigeria by the Nigerian Young Professionals Forum.
Beyond his academic records, the distinguished mathematician is multilingual, speaking French, English, and Yoruba fluently.
Currently, Dr. Hallowed Oluwadara Olaoluwa serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Lagos, where he continues to shape future generations of scholars through teaching, mentorship, and advanced research in mathematics.
