FACT-CHECK: US CENTCOM Dismisses Claims That IRGC Struck Two US Navy Destroyers
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has dismissed as false claims circulating that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) successfully struck two U.S. Navy destroyers operating in the Middle East.
In a post on X, CENTCOM described the claims as false, pushing back against reports attributed to the IRGC that Iranian forces had hit two American warships amid escalating tensions in the region.
According to the U.S. military, no U.S. Navy warship has been struck in the reported attacks. The U.S. Department of Defense and CENTCOM maintained that recent missile launches and attempted attacks attributed to Iranian forces failed to hit any American vessel or military base.
The fact-check comes amid heightened military tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
US Responds With Counter-Strikes:
The United States has also reportedly intensified its military response to what it described as aggression by the IRGC in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. forces have conducted a series of precision strikes over the past week as part of efforts to counter Iranian military activity and disrupt networks allegedly supporting IRGC operations.
Among the most significant claims from the American side is the destruction of 10 Iranian oil tankers within seven days.
According to U.S. officials, the vessels were allegedly connected to a multibillion-dollar “shadow fleet” involved in transporting Iranian oil through covert channels and generating revenue used to support IRGC activities.
The United States said Iran has so far been unable to effectively defend the network against the ongoing operations.
The conflicting accounts highlight the growing information battle accompanying the military confrontation, with competing claims from Iran and the United States making independent verification increasingly important.
