Filmmaker, Onyeka Nwelue Offers to Sponsor Thugs to Protect Peter Obi’s Votes
Award-winning Nigerian filmmaker and writer, Onyeka Nwelue, has stirred political conversations after expressing his willingness to sponsor individuals to protect the votes of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of future elections.
Nwelue made the declaration in a statement in which he offered financial support for a team of individuals he said would help safeguard Obi’s votes and ensure they were delivered to the appropriate destination.
The filmmaker stated, “I can sponsor a few thugs to protect Peter Obi’s votes and deliver it to the right place. If you are interested in being part of that team, let me know.“
His remarks have drawn attention to the contentious issue of electoral security, vote protection and the role of political supporters in safeguarding the integrity of elections in Nigeria.
Although the statement frames the proposed intervention as an effort to protect votes and ensure they reach the right destination, the reference to sponsoring thugs raises questions about the methods being contemplated and the potential implications for electoral peace and security.
Nigeria’s electoral process has repeatedly faced concerns over vote buying, intimidation, ballot snatching and other forms of electoral malpractice.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, statements involving the mobilisation of individuals to protect candidates’ interests are likely to attract public scrutiny.
Whether Nwelue’s declaration will translate into an organised initiative remains unclear.
However, his remarks have brought renewed attention to the debate over how supporters can defend their preferred candidates’ electoral mandates while ensuring that all efforts remain peaceful, lawful and consistent with democratic principles.
