2027: Iyabo Obasanjo Reportedly Eyes Alliance With Peter Obi, as Ogun Central Senate Race Faces New Twist
A fresh political realignment is reportedly unfolding ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, said to be considering an alliance with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Political sources indicate that consultations are reportedly underway over a possible arrangement that could see Obasanjo support Obi’s presidential ambition while seeking the backing of his supporters for her senatorial bid in Ogun Central.
Iyabo Obasanjo, who is seeking election to the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is reportedly exploring the proposed alliance as political actors intensify negotiations and reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the reported arrangement could introduce competing interests within the NDC in Ogun Central, where Hon. Rotimi George-Taylor is the party’s senatorial candidate for the same seat.
Under the proposed arrangement, Obi’s supporters in Ogun Central could be encouraged to vote for Obasanjo in the senatorial election in exchange for supporting Obi in the presidential contest.
Such an arrangement would create a cross-party electoral understanding, potentially allowing voters who support Obi at the presidential level to back a PDP candidate in the senatorial race rather than the NDC’s own candidate.
For Taylor, the reported development raises questions about how the party would reconcile support for its presidential candidate with its obligation to promote its senatorial candidate in the same constituency. The situation also highlights a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, where alliances across party lines can emerge as politicians seek to build broader electoral support beyond their respective party structures. An announcement regarding the proposed alignment is reportedly expected soon.
However, a formal agreement between Obasanjo and Obi, as well as official approval from their respective political parties, remains unconfirmed. The reported negotiations have drawn comparisons with the cross-party political alliances associated with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, whose political relationships have brought together figures from different parties around shared electoral interests.
Whether the reported arrangement involving Obasanjo and Obi will materialise remains uncertain. Its possible implications, however, extend beyond the presidential contest to the battle for the Ogun Central senatorial seat, where Obasanjo and Taylor are seeking the same legislative position under different party platforms.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, the reported development underscores the complex calculations surrounding political coalitions, candidate loyalty and the possibility of voters supporting different parties at different levels of the ballot.
For now, attention is on whether the reported consultations will produce a formal announcement and, if they do, how the proposed alliance will be reconciled with the NDC’s senatorial ambitions in Ogun Central.
