From Near Misses to Continental Glory: 14-Year-Old Adeolu Oreofe Crowned Africa’s Junior Spelling Champion
At just 14, Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe has risen to continental prominence, emerging as the 2026 African Spelling Bee Champion in the Junior Category after a thrilling competition held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Hailing from Ekiti State, the young spelling prodigy’s journey to the top has been anything but accidental. It is a story defined by persistence, resilience, and a steady climb through the ranks of competitive spelling.
Oreofe first caught national attention in 2023 when she secured a second-place finish at the MTN Spelling Bee. She followed it up in 2024 with another strong performance, finishing second at the Ekiti State Spelling Bee. By 2025, she had expanded her reach to the continental stage, placing fifth at the African Spelling Bee, before returning home to claim yet another runner-up position at the Nigeria Spelling Bee the same year.
Rather than discouraging her, these near victories became stepping stones. Each competition sharpened her skill, strengthened her resolve, and prepared her for the defining moment that would come in 2026.
That breakthrough finally arrived this year. Oreofe dominated the Ekiti State qualifiers, advanced to the national stage in Port Harcourt where she again impressed with a second-place finish, and then moved on to the African Spelling Bee finals. Competing against top spellers from over 20 African countries, she displayed remarkable brilliance, composure, and precision, ultimately outperforming her peers to claim the coveted continental title.
A student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College in Ado Ekiti, Oreofe has now secured not only the prestigious crown but also a $5,000 educational scholarship. Her victory also earns her the honor of representing Africa at the World Spelling Bee scheduled to take place in China later this year.
Her story stands as a powerful testament to the rewards of consistency and hard work. From repeated second-place finishes to standing atop the continent, Adeolu Oreofe embodies determination in its purest form.
Now celebrated as Africa’s Junior Spelling Champion, she represents the brilliance, resilience, and boundless potential of Nigerian youth, earning her a well-deserved place as the Real Nigerian of the Week.
