Gov. Alex Otti Moves to Bring Global Hospitality Giant to Abia as Hilton Targets Umuahia for Five-Star Luxury Hotel
Abia State is set for another major leap in its transformation agenda as the administration of Governor Alex Otti intensifies efforts to position Umuahia as a leading hospitality, tourism, and investment destination in Nigeria through a strategic partnership with Hilton International for the establishment of a world-class five-star hotel.
The proposed luxury facility, which is expected to operate under the globally renowned DoubleTree by Hilton brand, is poised to redefine the hospitality landscape of the state capital, boost tourism, attract investors, create employment opportunities, and further strengthen Abia’s rapidly expanding economy.
The ambitious project received a significant boost on Thursday, June 18, 2026, when a high-powered delegation from Hilton International visited Umuahia to inspect the proposed project site and engage with state officials on the next phase of implementation.
Speaking after the inspection visit, Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD, reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to excellence, quality infrastructure, and sustainable economic development.
The Governor explained that Hilton’s global reputation for quality service delivery, operational excellence, and world-class hospitality standards made the company the preferred partner for the project.
According to the Governor, “Excellence is the hallmark of this administration. We carefully considered several options, but Hilton’s globally recognised reputation for hospitality and service made it the preferred choice.
“Abia is witnessing unprecedented transformation, and we need hospitality infrastructure that matches the expectations of the growing number of visitors coming into our state.“
Governor Otti noted that the growing influx of investors, development partners, business executives, and government officials into Abia has created an urgent demand for premium accommodation and hospitality facilities capable of meeting international standards.
He further revealed that Abia is preparing to host several major international programmes and events, including the forthcoming Africando programme, which is expected to attract over 2,500 participants from different parts of the world.
The Governor emphasized that the state’s ongoing infrastructural revolution, coupled with major economic projects currently underway, has significantly elevated Abia’s profile as an emerging destination for business and investment.
According to him, “Abia is open for business, and we are creating the infrastructure needed to support economic growth.
“With the Abia Airport under construction, the proposed seaport project and the thriving industrial activities in Aba.
“The demand for world-class hospitality services will continue to rise. We are confident that Hilton’s presence in Umuahia will strengthen tourism, attract more investments and further position Abia as a preferred destination for business and leisure.“
The proposed Hilton project is widely viewed as a strategic complement to the state’s ongoing economic transformation efforts, particularly the development of critical infrastructure designed to attract local and foreign investments.
In her remarks, the Executive Director, Development, Europe, Middle East and Africa for Hilton International, Ms. Nida Sozugecer, expressed confidence in the enormous potential of Umuahia and commended the Abia State Government for creating a conducive environment for investment.
She disclosed that Nigeria remains one of Hilton’s fastest-growing markets globally and highlighted the company’s long-standing presence in the country.
According to her, “We have been operating in Nigeria for over 40 years and in recent years the country has become one of our top growth markets.
“Umuahia is certainly one of the powerful regional markets we are excited about. We have signed a Letter of Understanding and are making very good progress towards finalising the necessary procedures.
“We look forward to signing the agreement and bringing DoubleTree by Hilton Umuahia to reality as soon as possible,“ Ms Sozugecer stated.
She further commended the warm reception accorded the delegation and praised the commitment demonstrated by the Abia State Government towards bringing the project to fruition.
The Hilton executive disclosed that both parties had already signed a Letter of Understanding and were steadily advancing towards concluding all outstanding agreements required for the commencement of the project.
She expressed optimism that the development would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, stimulate business activities, attract more visitors, and significantly expand the state’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
Earlier, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Hon. Kingsley Agomuo, described the inspection visit as another major milestone in the journey towards delivering a globally competitive hospitality facility in the heart of Abia’s capital city.
Agomuo noted that Umuahia’s status as the political and administrative headquarters of Abia State has continued to attract a steady flow of government officials, development agencies, diplomats, investors, and business leaders, thereby increasing the need for premium hospitality infrastructure.
He revealed that following extensive engagements between the Abia State Government and Hilton Worldwide in the United Kingdom earlier in the year, DoubleTree by Hilton emerged as the preferred brand for the landmark project.
According to him, the state government has already fulfilled approximately 98 percent of the requirements stipulated by Hilton Worldwide and remains optimistic that the successful inspection visit will pave the way for the next phase of the project, including the commencement of construction activities.
The visit was attended by several top government officials, including the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Chief Matthew Ekwuribe; Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Chiemela Uzoije; Director-General of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Arc. Uche Ukeje, and other senior government functionaries.
The planned arrival of DoubleTree by Hilton in Umuahia is expected to further validate the growing confidence of international investors in Abia State and reinforce Governor Alex Otti’s vision of transforming the state into a modern economic hub driven by infrastructure, i
nvestment, tourism, and private-sector partnerships.
