GOVERNOR OTTI’S BOLD STAND FOR MAZI NNAMDI KANU: NOT JUST A TRIBUTE, BUT A DUTY — EXPOSING THE FAILURES OF FORCE OVER DIALOGUE
In a statement that has reverberated across Abia State and beyond, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, addressed the recent life imprisonment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, November 20, 2025. The Governor’s address was not merely an emotional tribute to a son of the state, but a firm and necessary assertion of his constitutional and moral responsibility as the leader of the state from which Mazi Kanu hails.
Governor Otti’s intervention underscores a rare combination of emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and leadership courage, qualities that are often absent in contemporary politics. Speaking on the tragic sentencing, the Governor reminded Nigerians that the roots of the current crisis around IPOB could have been mitigated if dialogue, restraint, and strategic engagement had been prioritized over force and violence. He recalled the September 2017 military invasion of Mazi Kanu’s family home in Afaraukwu Umuahia, which resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties, calling it an avoidable tragedy.
Governor Otti condemned the action at the time and has continued to advocate for peaceful resolutions, emphasizing that “leadership requires emotional intelligence, restraint and tolerance rather than force and violence.”
Governor Otti’s statement goes beyond condemnation; it is a blueprint for action. He revealed that from December 22, 2023, he personally engaged federal authorities at the highest level on alternative strategies for resolving the matter. Agreements were reportedly reached contingent on swift judicial processes, but delays prevented immediate outcomes.
Today, with the verdict delivered, Governor Otti asserts that the alternative resolution framework will now be activated. In a move that signals proactive governance, he has pledged continued engagement with the federal government, alongside collaboration with other well-meaning Nigerians, to secure Mazi Kanu’s freedom through dialogue and diplomacy.
The Governor’s stance is both courageous and unprecedented. Not all Governors would dare intervene in such a politically charged and nationally sensitive matter. By taking this step, Governor Otti has shown that leadership entails defending the rights and dignity of citizens from one’s state, even in the face of potential criticism or political backlash. His moves echo the likes of Hon. Obi Aguocha, who has publicly supported initiatives toward dialogue and peaceful resolution, highlighting a coalition of principled leaders committed to national unity and justice.
Governor Otti also issued a stern warning to politicians and opportunists who might attempt to exploit Mazi Kanu’s predicament for personal or partisan gains. He urged calm, restraint, and patience among the people of Abia State, emphasizing that reckless actions or inflammatory rhetoric could undermine ongoing high-level engagements.
In conclusion, Governor Otti’s address on the sentencing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not just necessary, it is the embodiment of responsible leadership. It affirms that in a democracy, the duty of a Governor extends beyond ceremonial functions; it includes the protection of citizens’ rights, the pursuit of justice, and the use of diplomacy to resolve conflicts. His unwavering commitment to dialogue, strategy, and peace in the South East sets a benchmark for other leaders, reinforcing the principle that courageous and proactive leadership can indeed pave the way for resolution, reconciliation, and genuine peace.
