HISTORIC ACADEMIC MILESTONE AND MASSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE BOOST AS GOV OTTI UNVEILS AMBITIOUS TRANSFORMATION AGENDA FOR ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICES
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has unveiled a sweeping package of achievements and forward-looking initiatives aimed at transforming the education and healthcare sectors, with a major focus on the revitalization of Abia State University, Uturu.
The Governor disclosed that the institution successfully held its 30th to 32nd combined convocation ceremony on Friday, graduating an impressive total of 10,255 students, a milestone that underscores both the resilience and continued relevance of the state-owned university in shaping future leaders.
In a bold move to address accommodation challenges and enhance the learning environment, Governor Otti revealed that the reconstruction of expansive hostel facilities has been flagged off. The project includes a 5,000-bed hostel for male students and another 5,000-bed hostel for female students, signaling a major investment in student welfare and campus infrastructure. Complementing these developments is the foundation laying for an International Secondary School, further reinforcing the administration’s commitment to building a holistic and globally competitive education ecosystem.
Governor Otti made these disclosures during the March edition of his interactive session, Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians, held at the Banquet Hall in Umuahia, where he engaged citizens on key policies, achievements, and ongoing reforms.
In what many consider a landmark intervention, the Governor announced the restoration of public electricity to Abia State University, Uturu, after decades of prolonged blackout, a development expected to significantly improve academic and administrative activities. He further disclosed plans for a 15-megawatt dedicated power solution that would enable the university to operate independently of the national grid, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and positioning the institution for modern research and innovation.
On the broader education front, Governor Otti indicated that the ongoing teacher recruitment exercise may surpass the initially planned 4,000 positions due to the overwhelming number of applications received, reflecting both the demand for employment and renewed confidence in the state’s education sector.
Turning to healthcare, the Governor revealed that the state has so far recruited 559 healthcare professionals out of an approved 7,741, with assurances that the recruitment portal will remain open until the target is fully achieved. He emphasized that this effort is part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the healthcare workforce across the state.
Additionally, he disclosed that 227 primary healthcare centres are currently undergoing upgrades to guarantee that every ward in Abia State has at least one fully functional healthcare facility, a move aimed at improving access to quality and affordable healthcare services at the grassroots level.
Governor Otti’s announcements reflect a deliberate and coordinated push to reposition Abia State’s critical sectors through strategic investments, infrastructure renewal, and human capital development, setting the stage for sustainable growth and improved quality of life
