Historic Shift in Nigeria’s Legal Leadership as Delta Monarch, Dr Albert Akpomudje, Emerges 54th Chairman of Body of Benchers, Becomes First Traditional Ruler to Lead Apex Legal Institution
In a landmark development for Nigeria’s legal profession, distinguished legal practitioner and traditional ruler, Albert Akpomudje, has emerged as the 54th Chairman of the Body of Benchers, setting a historic precedent as the first monarch to head the prestigious institution.
His emergence marks a significant moment in the evolution of the legal profession in Nigeria, blending traditional leadership with modern legal authority at the highest level. He succeeds Olukayode Ariwoola, who assumed the role in March 2025 following his tenure as Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The chairmanship of the Body of Benchers is a highly respected position, held for a single year and rotated alternately between senior members of the Bar and the Bench, reflecting a balance between practicing lawyers and the judiciary in steering the affairs of the profession.
Dr Akpomudje, who holds the revered traditional title of Eyabwien Alaska I, Ohworode of the ancient Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, brings decades of legal experience into his new role. As the founding partner of Albert Akpomudje & Partners, he has built a formidable career spanning over 44 years in legal practice. His leadership within the firm saw him serve as Managing Partner from 1995 until 2025, when he ascended the throne of his native community.
The Body of Benchers, established under the Legal Practitioners Act and headquartered in Abuja, stands as the highest regulatory authority in Nigeria’s legal profession. It plays a central role in maintaining the integrity, discipline, and standards of legal practice across the country.
Among its core responsibilities is the conduct of the Call to Bar ceremony, a critical rite of passage for law graduates. The body oversees the screening of candidates, confers the prestigious call to the Nigerian Bar, and issues certificates to successful applicants, formally ushering them into the legal profession.
Beyond ceremonial duties, the institution is deeply involved in regulating professional conduct. It sets ethical standards and enforces discipline through its Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, which investigates and sanctions cases of misconduct among lawyers.
Its membership reflects the highest echelon of Nigeria’s legal and judicial system, comprising the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justices of the Supreme Court, the President of the Court of Appeal, the Attorney General of the Federation, state Attorneys General, Chief Judges, and representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association. Members, known as Benchers, include a distinguished cadre of Life Benchers recognized for their enduring contributions to the profession.
The Body also plays a pivotal role in mentorship and leadership development, shaping the ethical foundation of emerging lawyers while fostering collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Nigerian Bar Association and the office of the Attorney General to strengthen reforms and professional standards.
With his dual experience as a seasoned legal practitioner and a traditional ruler, Akpomudje’s leadership is expected to usher in a unique perspective, reinforcing discipline, ethical conduct, and institutional integrity within Nigeria’s
legal landscape.
