“I Will Be the First Politician They Will Come After” — Wike Declares Unwavering Support for Tinubu Ahead of 2027
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he expects to be among the first politicians targeted by the opposition should President Bola Tinubu lose the 2027 presidential election to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or Peter Obi, stressing that his outspoken support for the President has placed him firmly on the political frontline.
Wike made the declaration during a media chat in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, monitored in Abuja on Wednesday, where he spoke extensively about his political position ahead of the 2027 general elections and the criticisms that have followed his decision to back President Tinubu.
The FCT Minister acknowledged that his unwavering support for Tinubu could come with significant political consequences if the President is defeated, particularly given the intensity with which he has defended and promoted the administration.
According to Wike, he is fully aware that his prominent role in the President’s re-election campaign could make him a major target for political opponents if the opposition takes control of the Federal Government after the 2027 election.
“I will be the first politician that I think they will come after. I will be the first politician. I know they will come for my head,” he said.
Despite the potential consequences, Wike maintained that he has no intention of retreating from his position. He said he had deliberately chosen to throw his political weight behind President Tinubu and was prepared to accept whatever outcome might arise from the decision.
The former Rivers State governor said his commitment to Tinubu’s re-election has become a central focus of his political activities, suggesting that the issue occupies his thoughts on a daily basis.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the president’s reelection. When I am eating, I think about the president’s reelection. Everything I am doing now is about the president’s reelection,” he stated.
Wike’s comments underscore the extent of his political investment in the Tinubu presidency as the country gradually moves towards the 2027 elections. His position has continued to attract criticism from sections of the opposition and political observers, particularly because of his history within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his previous political relationship with some of the leading opposition figures.
However, Wike insisted that the criticisms have not shaken his resolve. He said he had been subjected to intense name-calling and political attacks because of his position, but maintained that such criticism would not determine where he stands politically.
The minister argued that he remains more concerned about supporting Tinubu’s re-election than responding to those who have criticized his political choices.
“I don’t see where anybody in this country today has been called names the way my name has been. I am not bothered about people who say their [own] thing. My business is, like I said, I am going to support Mr President,” he declared.
Wike’s latest remarks further reinforce his determination to remain openly aligned with Tinubu ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 presidential election.
With major political figures already positioning themselves for the contest, Wike’s decision to openly campaign for the President has placed him at the centre of the emerging political battle, with the minister making it clear that he is prepared to bear the consequences of his choice regardless of how the election eventually unfolds.
