In a wave of reactions trailing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s latest ministerial nomination, retired United States Army Captain Bish Johnson has expressed strong approval of the appointment of former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
This development follows the unexpected resignation of former Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, prompting President Tinubu to forward General Musa’s name to the Senate as his replacement. It’s reported that the retired military chief is scheduled to undergo screening before the Senate today, December 3rd, 2025.
Speaking during a live interview on TVC News on Tuesday night, Captain Johnson described the nomination as both timely and strategically sound. He praised President Tinubu for opting to return a tested and proven security leader to the frontline of Nigeria’s defence management.
According to him, “It’s a wonderful appointment, appointment well deserved. President Tinubu has ensured operational stability by returning the former CDS as now Minister of defence.”
Captain Johnson noted that General Musa had been instrumental in Nigeria’s long-standing battle against insecurity, stressing that the retired CDS had contributed significantly to military operations over the past decade.
He added, “He was one of the security chiefs that has worked so hard on the insecurity that has been bedeviling this country for a decade now.”
The retired US Army officer further reflected on the disappointment felt by many security professionals when General Musa retired from service, asserting that his re-emergence in a top defence role would strengthen coordination across Nigeria’s security architecture.
“Some of us were saddened when he retired. Nigerians are going to have a better synergy between the ministry of defence and the operational military commanders including the Chief of Defence Staff,” he said.
The nomination has since sparked discussions among security analysts who believe General Musa’s extensive operational experience and established rapport with serving commanders could help stabilise Defence Ministry–military relations and reignite momentum in the fight against insurgency, terrorism, and banditry.
General Musa’s Senate screening is expected to attract significant national attention as Nigerians await the next steps in President Tinubu’s renewed approach to national security leadership.
