Kebbi: Commission condemns killing of 17-year-old almajiri, demands justice

The National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children’s Education, NCAOOSCE, has demanded a thorough investigation into the killing of 17-year-old Salihu Hassan, a student of Madarasatul Mallam Mainasara in the Illelayari area of Birnin Kebbi.

Salihu was reportedly found in a pool of blood in the early hours of Monday, November 24, 2025, before he was rushed by police officers to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The Kebbi State Police Command has already arrested a suspect, with the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of NCAOOSCE, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idris, described the incident as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

“The loss of this young Almajiri is painful. Violence against children undermines our collective efforts to build safe and inclusive learning environments. We urge the authorities to pursue justice swiftly and diligently,” he said.

The Commission commended the prompt response of security operatives but insisted on a transparent investigation to ensure justice for the victim.

NCAOOSCE said it is working with the Kebbi State Government, security agencies and community leaders to review safety measures in learning centres and support the family of the deceased.

It also extended condolences to the victim’s family, the school community and residents of Kebbi State, urging stakeholders to remain committed to protecting children and ensuring they learn in safe environments.
