Kenneth Okonkwo Fires Back at Peter Obi Over N₦5 Billion Demand, Dares Former Ally to Proceed to Court

Renowned actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has reacted strongly to reports of a legal demand allegedly issued by former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his legal team, mocking the move and daring his former political ally to pursue the matter in court.
Okonkwo, in a statement circulating on social media, said he had been informed of a letter allegedly demanding the payment of N5 billion over comments he made concerning Obi and the internal affairs of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The former spokesperson expressed amusement over the development, suggesting that if Obi needed funds for his political activities, he should seek assistance directly rather than pursue what he described as an attempt at extortion. He further claimed that during his time as Obi’s spokesperson, he personally covered expenses such as flight tickets and hotel accommodations while participating in campaign activities.
Despite the growing attention surrounding the matter, Okonkwo stated that he had not yet read the letter but issued a warning to Obi’s legal representatives regarding the possible consequences of any legal action.
According to him, as a former spokesperson, he possesses information obtained during his period of service which he has deliberately chosen not to disclose out of conscience and personal principle. He maintained that he does not ordinarily weaponize confidential information against individuals he has worked with, but suggested that circumstances could change if he is compelled to defend himself in court.
Okonkwo also questioned the wisdom of initiating a defamation lawsuit against a former spokesperson who had been closely involved in the inner workings of a political campaign, describing such a move as ill-advised.
The outspoken politician said he would respond formally after reviewing the contents of the letter, adding that he expects Obi and his lawyers to follow through with legal proceedings. He insisted that failure to take the matter before a court would be embarrassing for those behind the demand.
In a further escalation of the controversy, Okonkwo referenced allegations previously made by Obunike Ohaegbu, an aspirant for the Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency seat, who had publicly claimed that he was defrauded during the party’s nomination process and that party members blamed Obi for the development.
The exchange marks the latest chapter in the deteriorating relationship between Okonkwo and Obi, who were once key political allies during the 2023 presidential campaign. Their public disagreements have intensified in recent months, with both camps exchanging accusations over party affairs, leadership decisions, and allegations of corruption.
Political observers are now watching closely to see whether the dispute will ultimately be settled in court or continue to play out in the public arena, further exposing the deepening cracks within the opposition political movement.
