Labour Party Reaffirms Unity, Names Alex Otti National Leader, Recognizes Nenadi Usman as Chairman, Extends Goodwill to Peter Obi After ADC Move
The Labour Party (LP) has formally recognized Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, as its National Leader, while extending best wishes to its former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, following his decision to align with the coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This resolution was contained in a communiqué issued by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, after a meeting of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday. The meeting, according to the party, was convened to deliberate on critical issues bordering on the party’s stability, internal cohesion, growth, and long-term strategic direction.
At the end of the deliberations, the NWC unanimously affirmed Governor Alex Otti as the National Leader of the Labour Party, a move the party described as pivotal to strengthening its leadership structure and national outlook. The committee also conveyed its goodwill to Mr. Peter Obi, wishing him success in his future political journey and in his new political association.
In another major decision, the Labour Party announced the recognition of former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman. The party stressed that this position is in strict adherence to the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which held that the tenure of the former National Chairman, Julius Abure, had elapsed.
The party further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fully recognize and accord all constitutional rights and privileges to Nenadi Usman as National Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as National Secretary, in line with the apex court’s ruling.
Reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy, the NWC stated that all party congresses and the forthcoming National Convention would be conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution. Members at all levels were encouraged to actively participate in the congress processes to strengthen the party’s democratic foundations.
The Labour Party also expressed appreciation to its members and the Nigerian public for their continued support and confidence, reiterating that the party remains united, indivisible, and resolute in its mission to build a Nigeria anchored on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance.
