…Tells Banks, Eateries to Open their Toilets to Public

The Lagos State Government has reinforced its commitment to eradicating open defecation and advancing public sanitation with the provision of 1,710 fully functional public toilets strategically distributed across the state to serve residents and visitors.

This development forms part of a broader, sustained initiative aimed at promoting hygiene, safeguarding public health, and enhancing the overall environmental outlook of Nigeria’s commercial hub. The availability of these facilities reflects ongoing investments in sanitation infrastructure designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population.

Despite these efforts, the government has emphasized that achieving a cleaner Lagos requires collective action beyond public sector interventions. Authorities are now calling on private businesses, including filling stations, banks, eateries, and other establishments that serve the public, to open their restroom facilities for wider use where feasible. This collaborative approach is expected to significantly boost access to sanitation services and bridge existing gaps in underserved areas.

In parallel, the state has maintained a firm stance on enforcement of environmental sanitation laws. Individuals found engaging in open defecation are being apprehended and prosecuted in line with existing legal provisions. Officials stress that such measures are critical to protecting public health, preserving human dignity, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

The renewed push underscores the government’s position that sanitation is a shared responsibility. While infrastructural expansion remains ongoing, residents and business owners are urged to adopt responsible practices and support initiatives that promote cleanliness.

With these combined efforts, Lagos continues to move toward its goal of becoming a cleaner, safer, and more habitable megacity.
