The House of Representatives Minority Caucus is set to hold a decisive meeting in Abuja today, Monday, to deliberate on the ongoing legal battle instituted by its leader, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chinda, over an alleged plan to remove him from his position as Minority Leader.

The development follows Chinda’s lawsuit filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 25, 2025, in which he alleged that certain lawmakers and political parties were plotting to unseat him due to his perceived closeness to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In his suit, Chinda argued that any attempt to remove him from office would be unconstitutional and an infringement on his fundamental right to freedom of association. The Rivers-born lawmaker therefore prayed the court to issue an order restraining the defendants from proceeding with what he described as an orchestrated plan to oust him.

The suit listed twelve defendants, including the National Assembly, the Clerk of the National Assembly, the House of Representatives, the Speaker of the House, the Clerk of the House, and six political parties, namely the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Young Progressive Party (YPP).

Sources within the National Assembly revealed that Chinda’s leadership style has come under scrutiny, with some lawmakers accusing him of aligning too closely with the executive arm of government and weakening the opposition’s voice in the House. His critics reportedly believe that his leadership has contributed to the perception of the legislature as a “rubber stamp” institution, allegedly compromising the independence expected of the minority bloc.

Reports suggest that plans to unseat Chinda have been in motion and may come to a head when the House reconvenes from recess on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. In anticipation of the impending showdown, the minority caucus issued a notice of meeting on Sunday, October 5, to strategize a collective response to the lawsuit and other emerging political developments.

The notice of meeting was jointly signed by key minority lawmakers, including Hon. Agbedi Frederick (PDP), Hon. Afam Ogene (LP), Hon. Muktar Umar-Zakari (NNPP), and Hon. Peter Uzokwe (YPP). According to the agenda, the caucus will deliberate on “the response to the lawsuit instituted by House Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chinda, against all minority parties and any other business.”

Today’s meeting is expected to be tense, as it could determine whether Chinda retains his position or faces a coordinated move for his removal. Political observers are closely monitoring the outcome, viewing it as a critical test of unity and internal democracy within Nigeria’s parliamentary opposition.
