Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre Secures Two Convictions, 17 Cases Pending in Court
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence, with the Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre continuing to provide critical support services to survivors while pursuing justice for victims through the courts.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the centre currently has 17 cases of sexual assault and related offences before the courts, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and survivors receive the support and justice they deserve.
Prince Kanu further revealed that two convictions were secured in July, describing the development as a significant indication of the administration’s determination to strengthen the fight against sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
The achievements underscore the Abia State Government’s broader commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, improving survivors’ access to justice and reinforcing social protection mechanisms across the state.
Through the continued operation of the Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre, the government is sustaining efforts to provide essential services to survivors while supporting the pursuit of justice and promoting a safer environment for women, children and other vulnerable groups.
The administration’s approach reflects its determination to ensure that cases of sexual and gender-based violence receive the necessary attention, with stronger institutional support for survivors and accountability for offenders remaining central to its social protect
ion agenda.
