Nigeria Unveils New Comprehensive Senior Secondary Curriculum with Five Core Categories

In a bold step to reshape the nation’s educational system and equip students with 21st-century skills, Nigeria has introduced a new senior secondary school curriculum structured into five comprehensive categories. The new framework blends academic rigor, vocational training, and technological advancement to prepare students for global competitiveness and self-reliance.

1. Core and Compulsory Subjects:

At the heart of the curriculum are five compulsory subjects that every student must undertake. These are English Language, General Mathematics, Citizenship and Heritage Studies, Digital Technologies, and a core trade subject. This category ensures that students build a solid foundation in communication, numeracy, civic responsibility, digital literacy, and practical vocational skills.

2. Science-Oriented Studies:

For science-inclined students, the curriculum offers a wide range of subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture, Further Mathematics, Physical Education, Health Education, Foods and Nutrition, Geography, and Technical Drawing. This category is designed to nurture innovation, analytical skills, and practical knowledge critical for careers in medicine, engineering, technology, and agriculture.

3. Humanities and Creative Arts:

Students interested in humanities and arts will have access to subjects such as Nigerian History, Government, Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, Nigerian Languages, French, Arabic, Visual Arts, Music, Literature in English, Home Management, and Catering Craft. This category aims to foster cultural awareness, moral development, linguistic diversity, and artistic creativity.

4. Business and Financial Studies:

The business track prepares students for commerce and entrepreneurship with subjects such as Accounting, Commerce, Marketing, and Economics. This equips young Nigerians with financial literacy, business management skills, and economic insight required for leadership roles in both the private and public sectors.

5. Vocational and Trade Specializations:

To further strengthen the employability of graduates, every student is required to select at least one trade subject from options such as Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance, Fashion Design and Garment Making, Livestock Farming, Beauty and Cosmetology, Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs, and Horticulture and Crop Production. This innovation is expected to reduce unemployment by empowering students with practical, income-generating skills before graduation.
