OK Movement DG, Peter Ameh Resigns, Says He Is Focusing on Kogi East Senate Ambition
The crisis rocking the OK Movement took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as its Director-General, High Chief Peter Ameh, announced his resignation from the position, effective immediately.
Ameh’s resignation, announced in Abuja, has sparked fresh uncertainty among supporters of the Peter Obi/Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket under the National Democratic Congress, NDC, coming at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections are gathering momentum.
In a resignation letter sent to Vanguard, Ameh explained that his decision was primarily driven by his desire to devote more time and energy to his senatorial ambition in Kogi East, where he is seeking election in 2027 on the platform of the NDC.
He wrote, “I hereby formally tender my resignation as Director-General of the OK Movement, effective immediately.
“This decision will enable me to devote the necessary time and energy to my campaign for the Kogi East Senatorial District, where I am the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.”
Despite stepping down from the leadership of the movement, Ameh stressed that his resignation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal of his support for the NDC or its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, whom he described as “My leader.”
The former Director-General maintained that he remains committed to the political ideals and objectives that inspired the formation of the OK Movement, while expressing confidence in the leadership of Obi.
Ameh said, “I humbly accept any individual appointed by my leader to succeed me in this role.
“I wish to express my profound gratitude to my leader, Mr. Peter Obi, for his exemplary leadership, unwavering integrity, and enduring credibility. These qualities inspired the formation of the OK Movement and have continued to shape its vision and purpose.
“I remain firmly committed to the ideals that united us and wish the OK Movement every success in its future endeavours.”
His resignation comes against the backdrop of an internal leadership crisis that has previously rocked the movement, with rival factions emerging and some members publicly questioning Ameh’s leadership.
The latest development is therefore expected to intensify discussions over the future direction and leadership structure of the movement, particularly as political realignments ahead of 2027 continue to unfold.
Ameh’s decision also places the NDC’s Kogi East senatorial contest in sharper focus, as the former OK Movement DG prepares to shift his attention from coordinating the movement to building his own electoral campaign.
With the 2027 elections increasingly dominating Nigeria’s political space, the OK Movement now faces the task of managing its leadership transition and resolving lingering internal disagreements.
How quickly the movement settles on a successor and reconciles its factions could determine its ability to maintain its organisational strength and political relevance in the months ahead.
