The Labour Party (LP)’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has dismissed widespread speculation suggesting he is in talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan over a possible political alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Reports indicate that Obi’s clarification follows the growing political tension and media buzz that trailed a recent closed-door meeting between him and former President Jonathan in Abuja, a meeting that instantly ignited rumours of a potential opposition realignment.

Following the development, supporters of both political figures have flooded social media platforms with heated debates, with many urging either Peter Obi or Goodluck Jonathan to step aside for the other, a move seen by political observers as a test of the strength and unity of Nigeria’s opposition camp ahead of the next general election.

However, reacting to the speculation, Obi, through his media aide and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, debunked the reports, stating categorically that there was no pact or discussion concerning the 2027 elections.

He clarified, saying, “My principal and the former president have a very good working relationship and they know each other very well.

“So seeing them talk to each other does not mean anything. And it should not be translated to mean anything other than a platonic discussion on how to move this country forward.”

Dr. Tanko further revealed that even during a previous meeting between both men in Ghana, there was no conversation or agreement regarding 2027, stressing that their interactions were purely cordial and focused on national development.

He added, “But I don’t think there’s anything more than that. No discussion or pact around 2027. Even when they met in Ghana, I was there. So there was nothing like that.”

With this clarification, Peter Obi has effectively put to rest the swirling rumours of an imminent political alliance with the former president, reaffirming that his focus remains on nation-building, good governance, and the collective progress of Nigeria, rather than on early political scheming ahead of 2027.
