President Tinubu Renames Kaduna Petroleum Institute After Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Elevates Institution to Specialised University
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, in a move aimed at immortalising one of Nigeria’s foremost statesmen and democracy advocates.
The President made the announcement on Friday during his 2026 Democracy Day nationwide broadcast, where he reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey and paid tribute to notable figures who contributed to the nation’s political development.
According to Tinubu, the decision was taken to honour the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his immense contributions to Nigeria’s growth, democratic evolution, and national unity.
The institution, formerly known as the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, will now operate under its new name as a specialised university focused on geological sciences and engineering technology. The development is expected to strengthen the country’s capacity in critical sectors of science, engineering, and energy while preserving the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.
During the broadcast, the President described Yar’Adua as one of the key architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose vision and commitment to national partnership helped shape the country’s democratic foundations.
“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.
“Let us move forward together—rejecting division, cynicism, and despair; embracing unity, hope, and confidence. Let us build a Nigeria united by a common purpose, strengthened by diversity, where justice is accessible, liberty is secure, and opportunity is abundant.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour general Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership.
“In recognition of his contributions, the federal government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology,” he said.
The announcement formed part of the President’s broader Democracy Day message, which focused on national unity, democratic consolidation, and the responsibility of the current generation to build a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.
General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua remains one of the most respected figures in Nigeria’s political history. A distinguished military officer, he served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters effectively the country’s second-in-command between 1976 and 1979 under the military administration of former Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo.
He played a pivotal role in supervising Nigeria’s historic transition from military rule to a democratically elected civilian government, a process widely regarded as one of the country’s most significant democratic milestones.
Following his retirement from military service, Yar’Adua transitioned into politics and established the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), a political platform that later emerged as a powerful force within Nigeria’s democratic landscape and influenced the careers of numerous political leaders across the country.
His political activism and opposition to military dictatorship placed him at the forefront of the pro-democracy struggle during the regime of General Sani Abacha.
Yar’Adua was eventually arrested on charges of treasonable felony and imprisoned. He died in detention in 1997 under circumstances that remain controversial and continue to attract public interest decades later.
The renaming of the Kaduna institution is being viewed as a significant national recognition of Yar’Adua’s enduring legacy, ensuring that future generations of students and scholars will be reminded of his contributions to nation-building, democratic governance, and the pursuit of a united Nigeria.
