President Trump Declares Iran Ceasefire Over as Fresh Military Escalation Rocks Gulf
United States President, Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire with Iran has effectively collapsed following a fresh round of military exchanges between American forces and the Islamic Republic, signaling a sharp escalation in tensions that has further heightened fears of a wider regional conflict.
Speaking on Wednesday at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump launched a fresh verbal attack on Iran after the United States carried out overnight strikes and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced retaliatory attacks on US military bases in the Gulf.
The renewed hostilities sent shockwaves through global financial markets, with oil prices surging by about five percent amid growing concerns over the security of energy supplies and the possibility of further military confrontation in the Middle East.
Responding to questions about the status of the ceasefire, Trump made it clear that he no longer considered the agreement to be in force.
“I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them any more, they’re scum,” Trump said.
He continued his criticism of the Iranian leadership, accusing them of being dangerous and incapable of acting responsibly.
“They’re scum, they’re sick people, they’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” he stated.
Trump also disclosed that he plans to consult businessman-turned-negotiator Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom have played roles in previous discussions with Iranian officials. Despite that, the president insisted that the next move must come from Tehran if diplomatic engagement is to resume.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars,” he said.
The US president further accused Iranian officials of failing to honour the terms of the ceasefire agreement reached on June 17, alleging that they misrepresented the deal after it had been concluded.
“Everyone’s agreed, no nuclear weapon. We make a deal. They go outside, joke to the press, they say we never even talked about it. There’s something wrong with them, they’re cuckoo,” Trump added.
Trump’s latest remarks come at a time of heightened uncertainty in the Middle East, with military operations intensifying and diplomatic efforts facing renewed setbacks. His declaration that the ceasefire is effectively over raises fresh questions about the prospects for de-escalation, while global markets and international observers continue to closely monitor developments amid fears that the conflict could widen further.
