TECH INNOVATION WEEK IN ABIA AS GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES HACKATHON, STARTUP SUMMIT, AND LAUNCH OF DIGITAL AGRICULTURAL DATABASE
Abia State has kicked off a week packed with innovation and technology-driven activities as part of its digital transformation agenda under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti. The state’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation has unveiled a lineup of programmes designed to deepen digital creativity, enhance innovation, and boost entrepreneurship across various economic sectors.
Addressing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, after this week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by the Governor, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed that the programmes are strategically designed to empower young tech talents and strengthen the state’s economic framework.
According to the Commissioner, “Earlier today (Monday), a Hackathon, referred to as a Startathon, commenced at the UNDP-Built Unipod at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.”
The tech challenge is expected to bring together creative minds, developers, startup founders, and other digital innovators to build transformative solutions targeted at solving real socio-economic problems.
Highlighting the upcoming major event of the week, Prince Kanu disclosed that a Technology and Innovation Summit will soon take place, designed to enrich the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and expand opportunities for startups.
“The upcoming summit will showcase groundbreaking innovations from SMEs, developers, entrepreneurs, especially young innovators,” he stated.
The summit promises to be a historic milestone as it will witness the official unveiling of the Abia Technology Startup Law. This legislative framework represents a significant leap in promoting and protecting tech-driven enterprises, fostering an environment where innovation thrives and entrepreneurs can scale with ease.
In addition to the tech-focused initiatives, the Information Commissioner revealed another critical development expected during the summit from the Ministry of Agriculture.
He announced that the Ministry would launch a pioneering data-driven agricultural platform known as the Abia Agricultural Dynamic Database System (Abia ADDS).
According to him, the digital platform will transform agro-sector planning, support research, and drive innovation throughout the state’s agricultural value chain. He emphasized that Abia ADDS will “enhance data-driven planning and support innovation across the state’s agricultural value chain.”
With these initiatives, Abia State continues to consolidate its position as one of Nigeria’s emerging technology-driven economies, setting the pace for youth-focused development, smart agriculture, and tech entrepreneurship in the South-East and the nation at large.
