UMUAHIA SET FOR TRANSPORT REVOLUTION AS ULTRA-MODERN CENTRAL BUS TERMINAL NEARS COMPLETION AND GREEN SHUTTLE SCHEME TAKES SHAPE
Abia State is on the brink of a major transformation in its urban transportation landscape, as the State Government intensifies efforts to deliver a modern, efficient, and sustainable public transit system for residents and visitors in Umuahia.
Providing critical updates on the ongoing transport infrastructure drive, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Kanu, revealed that construction of the ultra-modern Umuahia Central Bus Terminal has reached an advanced stage, with the project now almost 100 percent completed and fully prepared for commissioning. The development marks a significant milestone in the state’s broader urban renewal agenda, aimed at repositioning Umuahia as a model city with world-class mobility systems.
Prince Kanu further disclosed that the government has gone beyond the construction of the terminal itself by ensuring that all necessary supporting infrastructure for the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service Scheme has been comprehensively put in place. This integrated approach underscores the administration’s commitment to not just building facilities, but delivering a fully functional and seamless transport ecosystem.
“These include charging stations, ticketing points, junction improvement works, as well as bus shelters strategically located across Umuahia.
“When fully operational, the new central bus terminal and the Green Bus Shuttle Service will position Umuahia among leading cities in Nigeria with modern and efficient public transportation systems,” Prince Kanu said.
The Green Shuttle initiative, designed to complement the central terminal, is expected to introduce a new standard of organized, eco-friendly, and commuter-focused transportation within the city. With features such as designated bus stops, improved traffic junctions, and structured ticketing systems, the scheme is poised to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve the overall commuting experience.
As the state prepares for the official commissioning of the terminal and rollout of the shuttle service, expectations are high that this bold investment in transport infrastructure will not only ease mobility challenges but also stimulate economic activities, attract investment, and reinforce Umuahia’s status as a fast-emerging modern ca
