WHEN THE POLITICAL FIG LEAVES FALL: WHERE IS BEN KALU HIDING? WHERE ART THOU, BEN?

In the Book of Genesis, after Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit, the first reaction was not courage, not boldness, not responsibility, but hiding.
“And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?”
That ancient question now echoes loudly across the political landscape of Abia State: Where is Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu?
The once thunderous voice that filled the airwaves with ambitious governorship calculations has suddenly gone silent. The man whose supporters loudly marketed as the supposed political messiah to “rescue” Abia in 2027 has quietly disappeared from the battlefield he once pretended to dominate. Instead of marching boldly into the governorship arena he once romantically flirted with, Ben Kalu has now reportedly sneaked back into the familiar safety net of the House of Representatives, secretly appearing for screening as an aspirant for the Bende Federal Constituency seat.
According to confirmed reports, the Deputy Speaker was screened alongside other aspirants by Panel C at Treasures Suites & Conferences, Abuja, not for governorship, but for the very same Federal House seat many believed he had outgrown politically.
The question therefore is unavoidable: What happened?
Why did the man who allegedly wanted to conquer Abia suddenly retreat into the shadows?
Why the secrecy?
Why the quiet return?
Why the sudden disappearance of the “2027 governorship movement” that his loyal propagandists tried so desperately to inflate?
Politics is not Nollywood where actors can switch scripts overnight without public scrutiny. Leadership ambition is not a masquerade dance where one wears different masks depending on the direction of the wind. The truth many political observers already know is simple: reality has finally confronted propaganda.
For months, political merchants attempted to create the illusion that Ben Kalu had the grassroots acceptance, statewide structure, emotional connection, and political momentum to challenge the rapidly consolidating influence of Governor Alex Otti in Abia State.
But beyond media noise, what truly existed?
Outside a carefully managed Abuja political circle and a few elite gatherings, the so-called governorship momentum struggled to breathe among ordinary Abians who have become increasingly resistant to recycled political calculations packaged as “new leadership.”
Like Adam after eating the forbidden fruit, political reality exposed nakedness that propaganda could no longer cover. And when nakedness is exposed, hiding becomes the next option.
That explains the quiet movement back to Bende.
That explains the silence.
That explains the disappearance of the governorship drums.
Abians are now watching a stunning political contradiction unfold before their eyes. A man presented as a governorship titan is now allegedly scrambling to secure the same constituency seat he was expected to leave behind for new entrants.
What greater evidence exists that the governorship ambition may have collapsed even before takeoff?
Ironically, the secrecy surrounding the screening has only deepened suspicions within APC circles themselves. Many party faithful who once defended the Deputy Speaker’s “larger ambition” now feel abandoned, confused, and politically stranded.
Some are asking privately whether the governorship aspiration was ever real or merely a bargaining chip for political negotiations ahead of 2027.
Others believe the handwriting became clear after internal assessments reportedly revealed the enormous difficulty of marketing the APC brand in Abia against the growing popularity of Governor Alex Otti’s governance style and infrastructural drive.
Whatever the case may be, one thing is becoming increasingly obvious: the political lion many were told to fear may have quietly returned to familiar territory for survival.
And just like in Eden, the question remains:
“Ben Kalu, where art thou?”
