2027 POLLS: Datti Baba-Ahmed Affirms Unwavering Loyalty to Labour Party, Rejects ADC Coalition and Signals Readiness for National Leadership
...says He Won’t Follow Obi to ADC
As political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, former vice-presidential candidate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has firmly declared his continued allegiance to the Labour Party, distancing himself from emerging coalition movements seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Baba-Ahmed, who was the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform, made his position clear amid speculations following Obi’s recent departure from the party.
Obi, who contested the presidency in 2023 but lost to President Bola Tinubu of the APC, has since aligned with the African Democratic Congress, a platform reportedly supported by a coalition of opposition figures aiming to unseat the APC in 2027.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Labour Party National Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that his political future remains firmly rooted in the Labour Party, stressing that he has no intention of following Obi into the ADC or any other coalition arrangement.
The former Kaduna North senator reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party’s ideology and vision, stating that his loyalty to the platform that brought him to national prominence remains intact. He further signaled his readiness to actively participate in efforts aimed at repositioning Nigeria ahead of the next general election.
Baba-Ahmed also expressed skepticism about the ADC-led coalition, dismissing it as lacking the conviction and moral clarity required to deliver meaningful change. He described the coalition as being driven largely by political discontent rather than a clear, people-centered agenda capable of addressing Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges.
With this declaration, Baba-Ahmed positions himself as a key figure within the Labour Party’s future plans, as the party recalibrates and prepares for the 2027 electoral contest amid shifting loyalties and intensifying opposition strategies.
