A palliative care nurse in western Germany has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering 10 patients and attempting to kill 27 others in a shocking case that has rocked the country’s healthcare system.

The unnamed nurse, who worked at a hospital in Wuerselen near Aachen, was accused of injecting his mostly elderly patients with high doses of painkillers and sedatives to ease his workload during night shifts. The crimes, which occurred between December 2023 and May 2024, revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse within a profession built on trust and compassion.

Prosecutors described the 45-year-old as a man who displayed open irritation toward patients requiring intensive care, showing “a complete lack of empathy” and behaving like a “master of life and death.” In court, it was revealed that he administered excessive doses of morphine and midazolam, a powerful sedative to render patients unconscious or hasten their deaths, making his job less demanding overnight.

The convict had been employed at the hospital since 2020, following years of professional training that began in 2007. His arrest in 2024 came after internal suspicions prompted an investigation that exposed a series of unexplained deaths under his care.

During sentencing, judges declared that the crimes carried a “particular severity of guilt,” a legal term in Germany that effectively bars early release after the standard 15-year minimum term for life sentences. Despite this, the defendant retains the right to appeal the ruling.

Authorities have confirmed that exhumations are ongoing to identify potential additional victims, with prosecutors warning that the nurse could face new charges if more evidence emerges.

The chilling case has drawn comparisons to that of former nurse Niels Högel, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 for murdering 85 patients in two northern German hospitals between 1999 and 2005. Högel’s actions, which involved administering lethal heart medications, earned him notoriety as Germany’s most prolific modern-day serial killer.

As investigators continue to probe the full extent of the Wuerselen nurse’s crimes, the case has reignited national debate over hospital oversight, mental health screening for caregivers, and the safeguards needed to protect vulnerable patients from those entrusted with their care.
