Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo Breaks Silence on Bible-Inspired Tattoo, Says It Is a Bold Tool for Evangelism as Online Debate Intensifies
Renowned relationship coach and President of the David Christian Centre (DCC), Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, has publicly defended the Bible-inspired tattoo on his arm, describing it as a deliberate and unconventional strategy to spread the Gospel to a wider audience.
The tattoo, which bears the scripture John 3:16 in Roman numerals — “III: XVI” was unveiled in a video shared on his official Instagram page on Saturday as part of activities marking his 50th birthday celebration. The short clip opens with a voice-over reciting the popular Bible verse, widely regarded as one of the most powerful summaries of the Christian message of salvation.
Shortly after the video went viral, social media was awash with mixed reactions, as supporters applauded the creativity behind the gesture while critics questioned its appropriateness for a Christian leader. Responding to the growing controversy via a Facebook post on Sunday, Pastor Okonkwo expressed surprise that much of the attention focused on the tattoo itself rather than the massive exposure the scripture received.
According to him, while some believers were busy judging the presence of a tattoo, millions of people had encountered the Gospel within 24 hours through the widespread circulation of the video across blogs and social media platforms. He hinted that a more detailed explanation would be given during a Monday night session, while also inviting members and the public to his praise party and thanksgiving service at DCC Lagos on both the mainland and island, promising an atmosphere of food, fun, and praise.
The tattoo revelation sparked strong opinions online. Some commenters cited biblical passages they believe prohibit marking the body, arguing that a pastor should model strict adherence to scripture. Others adopted a more moderate tone, suggesting that while such actions may be lawful, they may not necessarily edify the faith of others.
On the other side of the divide, many followers praised the tattoo as a creative and symbolic expression of faith. Several supporters described it as inspirational, while others referenced scriptures that speak of God’s name being written, interpreting the tattoo as a personal declaration of allegiance to Christ. A number of fans also expressed admiration for Okonkwo’s courage to challenge traditional norms in order to communicate the Gospel in modern ways.
Pastor Okonkwo, known for his contemporary, youth-friendly approach to relationship, marriage, and Christian living, continued to share photos from his golden jubilee celebrations, maintaining a cheerful tone despite the controversy. He urged those eager to debate the issue to remain calm, assuring them that the matter would be addressed after the weekend festivities.
By framing the tattoo as a form of evangelism rather than rebellion, the cleric has repositioned the conversation from body art to mission strategy, turning a potentially divisive issue into a broader discussion about creativity, culture, and new methods of reaching souls for Christ in the digital age.
