Igbo Language Resonates at Vatican as Prayer of the Faithful Features at Pope Leo XIV’s Christmas Vigil Mass
The rich spiritual and cultural heritage of the Igbo people was prominently showcased at the Vatican on December 24, during the Christmas Vigil Mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV at St Peter’s Basilica.
In a moment that reflected the universality of the Catholic Church, one of the intentions in the Prayer of the Faithful was proclaimed in the Igbo language. The inclusion highlighted the growing and impactful presence of Igbo Catholics across the world and acknowledged their contributions to the life and mission of the global Church.
The recognition went beyond words as an Igbo couple was also given a visible role in the sacred liturgy. They joined other faithful in carrying the offertory gifts to the Holy Father during the Eucharistic Procession, symbolising unity, service, and shared faith among the diverse peoples of the Church.
The appearance of the Igbo language and representation at such a significant Vatican celebration underscored the Catholic Church’s embrace of cultural diversity and its message that every people and language have a place at the heart of the faith, especially during the solemn celebration of the birth of C
hrist.
