The Abia State Government has intensified its efforts to improve road infrastructure across the state, with ongoing works in 49 locations executed through direct labour and 31 additional projects entrusted to contractors, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, has disclosed.
Prince Kanu made the revelation while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Highlighting recent achievements, the Commissioner announced the completion of the 1.25-kilometre Madonna Hospital Road, located off Aba Road in Umuahia, as part of the state’s drive to upgrade critical transport corridors. He also enumerated four new road projects recently added to the Ministry of Works’ maintenance schedule. These include:
1. Okporoenyi–Isipu Road in Bende – a 1-kilometre direct labour project.
2. Akara Junction–Ovim Bridge Road, Isuikwuato – Phase 1 maintenance covering 4.71 kilometres.
3. Obinulo Roundabout to Nkwoagu Secretariat Gate, Nkwagu–Isochi, Umunneochi LGA – an 8.6-kilometre federal section undergoing maintenance.
4. Nkwagu Junction to Nkwo Mbala–Isochi, Umunneochi LGA – maintenance of failed road sections spanning 5.2 kilometres.
Prince Kanu said, “The four new direct level works, the new ones that they have added to their basket include, amongst others, the construction of Okoroenyi-Isipu Road in Bende, that is a 1 kilometre road. The second one is maintenance of Akara-Ovim Road, Phase 1. That is Akara Junction to Ovim Bridge in the Isuikwuato Local Government Area, that is a 4.71 kilometre road. The third one is the maintenance of the federal sections of Obinulo roundabout to Nkwoagu Secretariat gate, Nkwagu-Isochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area, that is an 8.6 kilometre road. The fourth road is the maintenance of failed sections of Nkwagu Junction to Nkwo Mbala-Isochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area, that is a 5.2 kilometre road.”
The Commissioner further confirmed the completion of Section Three of the Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Ohafia Road, measuring approximately 22.5 kilometres. This brings the total completed stretch of the major arterial route to about 67.7 kilometres, with commissioning slated to take place soon.
Prince Kanu remarked, “It is just as well that the road is now completed and very soon it will be commissioned.”
He also recalled that the first two sections of the road, covering 45.7 kilometres, were commissioned last year by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The Commissioner explained that the final section experienced delays after contractors discovered that the soil conditions required redesign and additional approval from the State Government.
These projects, he emphasized, are part of Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to improving mobility, boosting economic activities, and enhancing connectivity across Abia State, signaling a transformative agenda in road infra
structure development.
