Tinubu at 74: President Unveils Special Armed Forces Support Fund, Commits Personal Salaries to Welfare of Wounded Soldiers and Fallen Heroes’ Families
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special intervention fund dedicated to supporting members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, particularly those wounded in active service and the families of fallen heroes, as part of activities marking his 74th birthday.
The President made the disclosure in a statement released on Sunday, where he also directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately create a dedicated account to operationalize the initiative.
“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” Tinubu said.
Framing the initiative as both a moral responsibility and a national obligation, the President emphasized that the fund would serve as a structured support system for military personnel who have sustained injuries in the line of duty, as well as dependents of those who lost their lives defending the nation’s sovereignty.
“Today, I have directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a special account for a fund dedicated to those who serve, those wounded in the line of duty, and the families of those who have paid the ultimate price,” he stated.
In a move that underscores personal commitment to the cause, Tinubu pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office as the initial seed funding for the scheme, noting that the gesture would complement existing welfare and insurance structures available to military personnel.
“As a personal commitment, all my salaries since assuming office will be paid into this account as seed funding, irrespective of existing insurance and welfare schemes for members of our armed forces,” he said.
The President further called on key stakeholders across the country, including state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the initiative and contribute to its success.
“I call on our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my friends and all well-wishers to support this initiative. Details of the account will be made available in due course,” the President added.
Reinforcing the significance of the initiative, Tinubu stressed the need for the nation to continually honour and support those who risk their lives for national peace and security, as well as their families who bear the burden of their sacrifices.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it,” he said.
The announcement comes as the President opted for a subdued 74th birthday observance, citing the prevailing national challenges and the need for reflection. In a personally signed message, he expressed deep appreciation to Nigerians for their goodwill, prayers, and continued support, noting that such solidarity remains a source of strength for his administration.
