Senior Russian General, Damir Davydov, Killed in Moscow Car Bombing After Alleged Social Media Security Blunder
…as Car Blown After His Son Shared His Car Number Plate Online
A senior Russian military figure has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, in what reports suggest may have been triggered by a serious operational security breach involving his son’s social media activity.
Lieutenant General Damir Davydov, a close associate of Vladimir Putin and a senior figure within Russia’s defence establishment, was reportedly killed instantly after a BMW X3 he was believed to be inside was destroyed in a firebomb attack on Tuesday in a Moscow suburb.
The explosion, which authorities say had the force equivalent to several hundred grams of TNT, tore through the vehicle in Balashikha, sending it up in flames before it collided with a nearby parked car. Emergency responders reportedly pulled Davydov from the wreckage, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been officially confirmed by Russian authorities.
Initial reports mistakenly gave his age as 62, though Davydov is believed to have been 57.
Investigators are now examining whether the attack was enabled by a critical lapse in security. A social media post allegedly linked to the general’s son, Rafael Davydov, appeared to show him posing beside a vehicle matching the one destroyed in the blast. The post is said to have included a visible number plate, which may have helped attackers identify and track the general’s movements.
Security analysts suggest the footage could have been used to locate the vehicle prior to the bombing.
Davydov reportedly oversaw parts of the Kremlin’s missile and artillery operations and played a key role in supplying weapons to Russian forces on the front line.
The blast site was cordoned off as Russian authorities launched a full investigation into what is being treated as a suspected targeted assassination. Another suspected car bomb was reportedly discovered and safely neutralized in south-west Moscow around the same period, raising concerns about coordinated attacks.
The incident occurred less than a mile from a previous high-profile killing last year involving Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, who was also killed by a car bomb near Moscow.
The latest killing comes amid heightened internal security concerns within Russia’s political and military elite. Reports suggest President Vladimir Putin has tightened personal security arrangements for his family, relocating his daughters to a heavily fortified residence within the Valdai forest complex. The area is protected by extensive air defence systems and is considered one of the most secure locations in the country.
Russian authorities have also reportedly ordered urgent reviews of surveillance infrastructure, amid fears that vulnerabilities in monitoring systems could be exploited to track
high-profile figures.
