Abia State Moves to Halt Erosion, Flooding as Gov. Alex Otti Orders Immediate Intervention in Bende, Umuahia South
The Abia State Government has stepped up efforts to tackle environmental challenges across the state, as Governor Alex Otti has directed the immediate deployment of mitigation measures to address the devastating erosion at the Amamba Uzuakoli erosion site in Bende Local Government Area and the Ipupe Ubakala flood site in Umuahia South Local Government Area.
The intervention is aimed at preventing further environmental degradation, safeguarding communities, and protecting lives, property, and critical infrastructure threatened by the worsening erosion and flooding.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
According to him, the Governor’s directive underscores the administration’s commitment to responding swiftly to environmental emergencies and implementing practical solutions that will reduce the impact of natural disasters on affected communities.
Prince Kanu revealed that the Commissioner for Environment, alongside a team of engineers, had already conducted on-the-spot assessments of both locations to evaluate the extent of the damage and determine the most effective engineering solutions.
He added that efforts were already underway to commence mitigation works aimed at recovering lost land, preventing further erosion and flooding, and ensuring the safety of residents and their properties.
The planned intervention forms part of the Abia State Government’s broader commitment to environmental protection, disaster risk reduction, and the preservation of communities vulnerable to the growing effects of climate-related 
challenges.
