Abia State Health Insurance Enrollment Hits 233,000 as Government Expands Coverage for Vulnerable Residents
The Abia State Government has recorded another major milestone in its drive to provide affordable and accessible healthcare, with enrollment in the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme rising to 233,000 beneficiaries since the scheme was launched in 2025.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by the State Governor, Dr. Alex C. Otti, OFR.
Prince Kanu revealed that the impressive growth in enrollment underscores the increasing confidence of residents in the state’s healthcare reforms. He added that the Ministry of Health is working closely with various diaspora groups to develop sustainable strategies aimed at expanding the health insurance scheme to cover more indigent and vulnerable residents across the state.
The initiative, according to him, reflects the commitment of the Alex Otti administration to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to every Abia resident, particularly those who are unable to afford medical services.
On the public health front, the Commissioner also delivered reassuring news, stating that no cases of diseases of public health importance were recorded in Abia State during the period under review. These include Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, cholera, diphtheria, Mpox, and yellow fever.
