Wike Breaks Silence on Fubara’s Political Future, Reveals Governor’s Role in Tinubu’s Re-Election Coalition
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed suggestions that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has suffered an irreversible political setback following the prolonged political crisis that rocked the state.
Wike maintained that Fubara’s political future remains open, insisting that it would be premature and incorrect to conclude that the governor has lost his political relevance because of the political disagreements and developments that characterised his relationship with his predecessor.
The FCT Minister made this clarification on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during his monthly media chat with selected journalists in Abuja, where he addressed issues surrounding Rivers State politics and the governor’s political standing.
According to Wike, Fubara is still a young politician with considerable time ahead of him to pursue his political ambitions. He argued that the governor’s political prospects should not be judged solely by the challenges he has encountered, particularly the protracted political confrontation that generated significant tension within Rivers State.
The former Rivers State governor also disclosed that Fubara remains actively involved in the Rainbow Coalition, a multi-party political platform established to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Wike further revealed that Fubara has played an active role in the coalition’s activities in Rivers State, pointing out that the incumbent governor personally unveiled candidates of the political group in the state.
“Governor Fubara is a young man. It will be incorrect to say that his political future is gone.
“Fubara is an active member of the Rainbow Coalition; in fact, he was the one who unveiled the Rainbow Coalition candidates in Rivers State,“ The FCT Minister said.
Wike’s comments offer a fresh perspective on the political relationship between the two leaders, particularly against the backdrop of the crisis that previously threatened the stability of the Rivers State Government and generated intense political realignments.
The political dispute between Wike and Fubara had triggered divisions among political stakeholders, lawmakers and supporters in Rivers State, with widespread speculation about the governor’s political survival and his chances of securing another term in office.
However, following their reconciliation in May 2026, Fubara reportedly abandoned his re-election ambition, a development that further fuelled discussions about his political future and the direction of the state’s political structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike’s latest remarks, particularly his confirmation of Fubara’s involvement in the Rainbow Coalition, suggest that despite their previous political differences, the governor remains part of the broader political arrangement supporting President Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
His declaration is also likely to generate fresh reactions within Rivers State’s political circles, where questions surrounding Fubara’s next political move and the balance of political influence between the governor and his predecessor remain subjects of considerable interest.
