Abia State Launches Ambitious Addressing Infrastructure Programme to Boost Urban Planning, Safety, and Investment
In a major move to modernize urban management, the Abia State Government has unveiled a comprehensive addressing infrastructure programme designed to introduce standardized street naming, house numbering, and geo-referenced addressing across the state.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a briefing with journalists on the outcomes of this week’s Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that the initiative is a key component of the State’s Urban Renewal Programme and is aimed at promoting order, improving urban planning, facilitating emergency services, and stimulating economic growth.
He highlighted that the lack of standardized street names and house numbers in many urban areas had historically slowed logistics, weakened the state’s revenue systems, and created uncertainties for potential investors.
“This programme is critical for addressing these challenges and ensuring that Abia State becomes more business-friendly and navigable,” he noted.
The Commissioner further stated that the project would be implemented under the stewardship of three key development authorities: the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), and Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA).
To ensure effective execution, the State Government is set to appoint a project manager who will oversee the implementation of the addressing infrastructure programme, coordinating efforts across the urban centers.
This move is widely expected to strengthen Abia State’s infrastructure framework, enhance revenue collection, improve emergency response capabilities, and create a conducive environment for investors, reflecting Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to modern, structured, and sustainable urban de
velopment.
