Abia State’s innovative transportation initiative, the Electric Bus Scheme, is recording remarkable success, with tens of thousands of residents already benefiting from free rides, according to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.
Speaking on Tuesday during a briefing for journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, Prince Kanu confirmed that the pilot phase of the scheme was running smoothly, attracting growing public interest and participation across the state.
Since the official rollout of the pilot program on December 24, 2025, a total of 77,774 residents have utilized the free bus services, highlighting the scheme’s rapid adoption and positive reception. This figure represents a striking increase from the 31,344 beneficiaries recorded during the initial briefing, reflecting a rising awareness and enthusiasm among commuters.
