Abia @ 35: Gov. Alex Otti Administration to Mark Anniversary With Project Commissioning, New Development Initiatives
The Abia State Government has unveiled plans for a week-long celebration to mark the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state, with the administration of Governor Alex Otti set to use the occasion to showcase completed projects and flag off fresh development initiatives across the state.
The programme, according to the state government, will depart significantly from the traditional anniversary celebrations associated with previous administrations, with emphasis placed on infrastructure, development and projects that directly impact the lives of residents.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, August 10, 2026, while briefing pressmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
Prince Kanu explained that rather than organising the usual ceremonies and award presentations that had characterised anniversary celebrations in the past, the present administration would dedicate the occasion to commissioning completed projects and launching new ones as part of its broader development agenda.
“Abia Government is poised to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the creation of Abia State.
“This year’s celebration will deviate from the norm in that the Government will use the occasion of the celebration to commission a number of projects; while flagging off new ones.
“Those of us who were here before now will recall that in the past, there used to be a period for some form of jamboree and some awards that some people used to enjoy in the State.
“This time around, the Government will not embark on any such awards.
“Rather, the Government will want to use the opportunity to continue to commission projects, flag off new ones, and generally to improve the living standards of Abia’s citizens,” Prince Kanu disclosed.
The commissioner said the anniversary would therefore serve as another platform for the administration to highlight its ongoing transformation efforts and demonstrate the progress recorded in various sectors since Governor Otti assumed office.
Among the projects scheduled for commissioning during the anniversary activities are the Obingwa General Hospital and the Cottage Hospital at Abayi in Aba.
The week-long programme is also expected to feature the flag-off of the Pocket Layout Estate in Umuahia, further underscoring the administration’s focus on expanding infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for economic and social development.
The inclusion of both completed projects and new initiatives in the anniversary programme reflects the government’s stated approach of linking celebrations to tangible development outcomes rather than concentrating solely on ceremonial activities.
According to Prince Kanu, the anniversary activities are expected to provide additional momentum to the administration’s ongoing transformation agenda while giving residents an opportunity to witness and assess some of the projects being delivered across the state.
“It promises to be a week-long celebration that will further give a major impetus to the transformation journey of the Alex Otti-led Administration.
“We will avail you the media. More details about the celebrations in the coming days,” the Commissioner explained.
The state government is expected to release the full schedule of activities and additional details of the projects and programmes lined up for the 35th
anniversary in the coming days.
