The Abia State Government has announced that the proposed Abia Start-up Bill, sponsored by the State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations, has been successfully passed into law by the Abia State House of Assembly, a landmark development that positions the state as a rising hub for digital innovation and enterprise.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday during a media briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, where he highlighted the major outcomes of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Chioma Otti.

According to the Commissioner, “The bill is in line with Governor Otti’s promise in his manifesto to establish a thriving digital economy for Abia State, one that will stimulate statewide innovations across many sectors.”

Prince Kanu explained that the passage of the bill marks a critical step in actualizing Governor Otti’s vision of transforming Abia into a digitally driven economy capable of harnessing the creativity and technological potential of its youth and entrepreneurs.

He further stated, “With the passage of the bill, the next important step will be for the Governor to grant his assent by signing the bill into law. And with the law in place, certain necessary steps will be taken to establish the Abia State Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Board and the subsequent launch of the Abia Startup Portal.”

The Information Commissioner emphasized that the strategic move by the Otti-led administration will not only provide a robust institutional framework for innovation and start-up growth but also create an enabling environment for emerging businesses to thrive.

Prince Kanu maintained that the new legislation represents a major stride toward economic diversification, employment creation, and youth empowerment, reinforcing the Otti administration’s commitment to positioning Abia as a technology-driven economy and a model for digital transformation in Nigeria.
