The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has performed the symbolic lighting of the Torch of Unity and Peace to officially flag off the 1st Abia State Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta, 2025.

The historic event took place on Monday at the Governor’s country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, marking the commencement of a week-long sporting celebration that promises to unite students across the state through competition, teamwork, and excellence.

Performing the brief but symbolic ceremony, Governor Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, disclosed that the sports fiesta is scheduled to hold from November 25th to 29th, 2025. The event will feature 23 sporting disciplines involving 38 tertiary institutions both public and private across Abia State.

Reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports development, Governor Otti described the lighting of the torch as a representation of hope, unity, and the renewed spirit of the Abia youth.

“Today we gather here to light a torch, not merely of fire, but of hope, passion and youthful energy.

“As the torch travels through the 38 participating institutions in the state, both state and private owned, it will carry with us the message of unity, discipline and excellence that defines Abian’s spirit.

“These games are more than competition, they are a platform for talent discovery, moral redirection and positive engagement, because through sports, our young people will find purpose, strength and teamwork, the very qualities our society needs to rise above social vices and embrace progress,” the Governor stated.

Governor Otti commended the Senior Special Assistant on Tertiary Institutions, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, who also serves as Chairman of the Central Organising Committee in collaboration with the Abia State Sports Council, for his diligence, vision, and commitment to making the event a reality.

To further encourage participation and reward excellence, Governor Otti announced a ₦500,000 grant for any institution presenting athletes in five or more sporting events. He described the incentive as a way to motivate schools to fully engage in the fiesta and showcase their talents.

He also urged students to embrace teamwork, discipline, and purpose through sports, emphasizing that the games would help nurture future champions who would make Abia State proud both nationally and internationally.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, described the sports fiesta as a landmark initiative of the Ministry of Tertiary Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

Prof. Uche explained that the fiesta was conceived to provide a platform for students in both public and private tertiary institutions to interact, network, and showcase their talents. She noted that it aims to foster unity, inclusion, and healthy engagement among students, thereby promoting the holistic development of Abia youths.

According to her, “the programme underscores the inclusiveness of the present administration’s education policies,” highlighting that the games will feature various events designed to promote friendship, laughter, and teamwork.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwobilor Ananaba, commended the initiative as a demonstration of the government’s strong commitment to grassroots sports development.

Sir Ananaba stressed that the Otti administration’s vision for sports begins from the foundation level, encompassing primary and secondary schools to identify, nurture, and develop budding talents. He added that extending the programme to tertiary institutions would further deepen youth engagement and sporting excellence across the state.

Following the lighting ceremony, the Torch of Unity and Peace will embark on a symbolic tour across all participating tertiary institutions in Abia State, before returning to the Umuahia Township Stadium for the grand opening of the games later this month.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief of Staff to the Governor, members of the State Executive Council, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tertiary Education and Chairman of the Central Organising Committee, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, and the State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, among others.
