The Abia State House of Assembly, during its plenary session held at the Assembly Complex, Umuahia, deliberated on a Matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by the Honourable Member representing his constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe.

The motion, which attracted widespread attention on the floor of the House, centered on the alarming and continued destruction of properties belonging to Igbo indigenes in Lagos State.

Hon. Ibekwe described the situation as deeply worrisome and unacceptable, noting that many innocent citizens of Igbo extraction have suffered huge losses in recent attacks targeting their businesses and residential properties in Lagos.

Raising the motion, the lawmaker passionately appealed to the Abia State House of Assembly to take a firm stand on the matter, urging the Federal Government to intervene without delay.

In his prayers, Hon. Ibekwe called on the House to:

1. Urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the National Assembly to act swiftly in restoring peace, order, and justice, and to take concrete steps to prevent further destruction of properties belonging to Igbo people in Lagos State, regardless of the pretext under which such acts occur.

2. Encourage the Governors of the South-East States to emulate the exemplary leadership of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, who has successfully created a friendly and secure business environment for investors of Igbo extraction. This, he said, would inspire many entrepreneurs and business owners to relocate their investments back home, thereby strengthening the economic foundation of the Southeast region.

The motion sparked thoughtful deliberations among lawmakers, with several members expressing solidarity with Hon. Ibekwe’s concerns and supporting the call for immediate action to safeguard the interests of Igbo citizens across the federation.

Following his presentation, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe rose on a Personal Explanation, reiterating his unwavering commitment to the protection of Igbo interests and the promotion of peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.

The matter has since been referred to the appropriate committee for further legislative action and engagement with relevant authorities.
