ABIA EMERGES CHAMPIONS AS SOUTH EAST OPEN SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP ENDS IN GRAND STYLE IN UMUAHIA
The maiden South East Open Scrabble Championship came to a thrilling and successful conclusion in Umuahia, drawing participants, officials, and enthusiasts from across the region in what has now been described as a defining moment for mind sports development in the South East.
After days of intense competition, strategic brilliance, and mental dexterity, Abia State rose above its counterparts to emerge overall champions. The host state delivered an outstanding performance, recording 18 wins and one draw from a total of 22 games to clinch the prestigious title, sending a strong message about its growing dominance in the game of scrabble.
Anambra State followed closely behind with an impressive showing of 16 wins and a draw, securing the second position, while Imo State finished third with 14 wins, completing the podium standings after a fiercely contested series of matches.
Enugu and Ebonyi States, despite their spirited efforts and moments of brilliance, settled for fourth and fifth positions respectively, narrowly missing out on podium recognition in a competition that tested not just skill but endurance and composure.
The closing ceremony was marked by commendations and reflections on the success of the tournament. Declaring the championship officially closed, the Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Jane Igwe, expressed profound appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his unwavering commitment to sports development and for providing the necessary support that made the hosting of the tournament a reality.
He further lauded the participating states for their discipline, sportsmanship, and dedication throughout the three-day event, noting that beyond the competition, the championship served as a platform for learning, growth, and regional unity among players.
“At least you have tested God’s own State. Once again, I want to thank you all for coming, participating, very well disciplined, and I know that you are going home with improved knowledge, improved skill, and more determination to do better,” Hon. Ananaba said.
Also lending his voice, the State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for making the championship possible, while also commending the Sports Commissioner for his role in ensuring the seamless execution of the event.
He acknowledged the commitment of the athletes who travelled from various states to participate, emphasizing that their presence added value and prestige to the competition. He further wished them success in their future sporting pursuits.
In a highlight moment of the event, the Most Valuable Player, Chinedu Thorpe, shared his excitement and fulfillment at emerging as the standout performer of the championship. He commended the Abia State Government for creating an enabling environment for the tournament and for investing in platforms that promote intellectual sports.
Thorpe also used the opportunity to inspire young people, encouraging them to embrace scrabble as a meaningful and rewarding pursuit capable of channeling their energy into positive and productive ventures, rather than drifting into crime and criminality.
The championship, widely regarded as a huge success, not only showcased exceptional talent but also reinforced Abia State’s rising profile as a hub for sports excellence and youth engagement in Nigeria.
