Gunman Breach Attempt at White House Correspondents’ Dinner Foiled, Trump Evacuated Safely
…says Suspect in custody, Trump safe
Tension gripped Washington on Saturday night as a potentially devastating security breach was swiftly contained during the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Dinner, forcing the emergency evacuation of former U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
The dramatic incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile event was underway. According to officials, at approximately 8:36 p.m., a lone suspect armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives stormed into the hotel lobby and attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint.
Law enforcement sources revealed that the suspect was immediately intercepted by Secret Service agents, triggering a brief but intense exchange of gunfire that sent shockwaves through the venue.
During a late-night briefing, authorities disclosed that the suspect is believed to have been a registered guest at the hotel. “Preliminary information, we do believe he was a guest here at the hotel.
“We have secured a room here in the hotel, and we’ll go through the appropriate procedures to determine what was inside there,” Carroll said.
Despite the chaos, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Officials confirmed he was not struck by gunfire. However, a Secret Service officer sustained a gunshot impact to his protective gear but survived the close-range encounter.
“He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job.
“I just spoke to the officer, he’s in great shape, very high spirits,” Trump told reporters in the White House Briefing Room.
Trump recounted the tense moments leading up to his evacuation, initially mistaking the sound of gunfire for something else.
“I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray going down. It was a gun. It was pretty far away, but it was a gun,” he said. He added that Secret Service agents acted with remarkable speed, escorting him and the First Lady to safety within seconds.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, noting that he is believed to have acted alone, with no evidence of a broader threat.
Images shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform showed the suspect lying face down on the floor, surrounded by armed agents moments after his arrest.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as between five and eight gunshots rang out, abruptly halting the event. Secret Service agents were heard shouting “shots fired,” while radio communications quickly confirmed the suspect had been subdued.
Among those present was Acting Attorney General Jeanine Pirro, who painted a vivid picture of the aftermath inside the ballroom.
“A whole room went silent. When I lifted my head, every law enforcement officer was out there, as we all had our heads down, thousands of them,” Pirro said.
National Guard personnel were subsequently deployed to secure the premises, as guests were evacuated and barred from re-entry.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran praised his team’s response, emphasizing the effectiveness of layered security systems.
“We got to see what they do, and that individual, when he charged a checkpoint, was apprehended. It shows that our multi-layered protection works,“ Curran said.
Weijia Jiang confirmed that no injuries were recorded within the main event space, crediting the swift evacuation order issued immediately after the gunfire.
Pirro further revealed that the suspect is facing serious federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and use of a firearm during a violent crime, with more charges expected.
“It is clear, based upon what we know so far, that this individual was intent on doing as much harm and damage as he could. Because the checkpoint worked, there was no one injured when it was clear where this defendant was going,” Pirro said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation moved quickly, deploying its Joint Terrorism Task Force and crisis response units to the scene. Assistant Director Darren Cox praised the bravery of officers involved.
“The American public should be proud of the quick response and heroic actions from law enforcement officers tonight. Their actions are absolutely heroic,” Cox said.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that investigators are actively analyzing forensic evidence, including firearms and shell casings, while conducting interviews with witnesses. He urged members of the public to come forward with any information, stressing that “No piece of information is too small.”
Officials reiterated that Trump was inside the ballroom at the time of the incident but was safely evacuated before the suspect could get anywhere near the event space.
“What we have here is a multi-layered approach. When he reached that checkpoint, Secret Service agents and law enforcement engaged immediately and brought him into custody before anyone was harmed,” Carroll said.
In a post on Truth Social shortly after the incident, Trump commended law enforcement efforts and encouraged calm.
“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” he wrote.
He later reflected on the emotional impact of the moment, describing it as one that brought attendees together. He also acknowledged ongoing concerns about political violence but maintained that he remains focused on his responsibilities, calling the presidency a “dangerous profession.”
Trump confirmed that all key officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet members, were unharmed and in “perfect condition.” He added that the event is expected to be rescheduled within 30 days.
Describing the suspect as a “very sick person,” Trump reiterated his praise for the rapid and decisive response of security personnel.
As investigations continue, federal and local authorities are working to determine the suspect’s motive and background, with officials emphasizing that the swift action of security for
ces prevented what could have been a far more tragic outcome.
