ABIA EMERGES NIGERIA’S ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE POWERHOUSE, RANKS 2ND BEST IN NATIONAL ROAD QUALITY ASSESSMENT

A new 2025 residents’ assessment report by the pSPI has placed Abia State among the leading states with the best road quality in Nigeria, further reinforcing the growing reputation of the state as one of the country’s fastest-rising infrastructure success stories under the administration of State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.
According to the report, Abia ranked 2nd nationwide in road quality assessment, coming behind only Gombe State, while outperforming several states traditionally regarded as major economic and infrastructural hubs across the federation.
The ranking places Abia ahead of states such as Jigawa, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Ebonyi, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, signaling a dramatic transformation in the state’s road infrastructure landscape within a short period.
The assessment, which reflected residents’ perception of road quality and accessibility in 2025, has been widely interpreted as a validation of the ongoing urban renewal and aggressive road reconstruction drive currently reshaping communities across Abia State.
For years, Abia was often associated with decaying infrastructure, abandoned road projects, flooding, and difficult transportation networks that affected businesses and daily activities.
However, the latest ranking suggests a significant reversal of that narrative as multiple roads across Aba, Umuahia, and several local government areas continue to witness rehabilitation and reconstruction.
Observers say the improvement in road infrastructure has not only enhanced transportation but has also boosted commercial activities, reduced travel time, improved security access, and restored investor confidence in the state’s economic potential.
The report further highlighted the widening infrastructure gap between states making visible investments in public works and those struggling with deteriorating road networks. While Abia secured a top-tier position nationally, several states fell into the lowest category of road quality assessment, including Ogun, Kogi, Imo, Taraba, Ondo, Edo, Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Kwara, Kaduna, and Ekiti.
Political analysts and residents alike have continued to describe Abia’s emergence in the top rankings as evidence of deliberate governance, strategic planning, and infrastructure-focused leadership aimed at repositioning the state for long-term economic growth and development.
The latest recognition is expected to further strengthen public confidence in the ongoing transformation agenda across Abia State as the government continues to prioritize road expansion, connectivity, and urban modernization.
