Abia Launches Pilot Biogas Project in Secondary School to Drive Renewable Energy Innovation
The Abia State Government has deployed a pilot biogas digester project at a secondary school in Owerrinta as part of strategic efforts to explore renewable energy alternatives and promote environmentally sustainable solutions across public institutions in the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that the initiative represents another step by the present administration toward embracing innovation, science and technology-driven solutions capable of addressing energy and environmental challenges within schools and government institutions.
According to him, the pilot scheme is expected to provide practical insight into how organic waste can be converted into useful renewable energy while also supporting research and long-term sustainability planning within the education sector.
“The project, when fully on screen, will demonstrate the viability of biogas as a renewable energy source from organic waste within schools or institutions. The project will also seek to generate available research data for potential large-scale implementations,” Prince Kanu said.
The project is expected to encourage proper waste management practices while introducing students and educational institutions to modern renewable energy technologies capable of reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
Contributing, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. David Kalu, explained that the pilot biogas initiative is specifically designed to assess the feasibility, cost-effectiveness and scalability of producing biogas from organic waste for possible use in schools and other public institutions across the state.
He noted that the initiative remains at its developmental stage and has not yet commenced gas production, stressing that the government intends to carefully evaluate the outcome of the pilot before taking further decisions on expansion.
According to him, data, operational performance and feedback generated from the project would determine whether the initiative would eventually be replicated in other schools across Abia State.
The development further highlights the growing emphasis of the Abia State Government on innovation, renewable energy adoption and research-based solutions aimed at improving public infrastructure, environmental sustainability and educational development under the administration of Go
