Abia Sets October for Statewide Distribution of Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets
The Abia State Government has announced plans to commence the statewide distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets in the first and second weeks of October 2026, in a renewed push to strengthen malaria prevention and control across the state.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to protect residents from malaria and promote effective preventive healthcare, particularly among vulnerable populations across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the development on Monday, September 21, 2026, while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, the mosquito nets have already started arriving in Abia, signalling the commencement of preparations for the statewide exercise.
He explained that Governor Otti is expected to officially launch the distribution programme once a definite date is confirmed, giving the exercise a formal statewide kickoff.
Prince Kanu further disclosed that the state government is currently consulting with relevant stakeholders across all 17 Local Government Areas to put the necessary arrangements in place for a smooth, coordinated and effective distribution process.
The consultations are expected to help ensure that the treated mosquito nets reach intended beneficiaries across communities, while strengthening public participation and awareness around malaria prevention.
