Abia Moves to Tackle Malaria at Source, Targets Mosquito Breeding Sites in Two LGAs
The Abia State Government has intensified its malaria prevention efforts with plans to commence larvae source management activities in Isuikwuato and Aba South Local Government Areas before the end of September 2026.
The intervention, which is being coordinated by the State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme, is aimed at reducing mosquito populations by tackling breeding sites before mosquitoes mature and spread malaria.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, September 21, 2026, while briefing newsmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, available data from malaria surveillance and vector-control activities identified Isuikwuato and Aba South as areas with significant mosquito larvae breeding activities.
The government therefore plans to target identified breeding locations through larvae source management, an approach designed to interrupt the mosquito life cycle at its early stage and complement other malaria prevention measures across the state.
The latest intervention forms part of the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen malaria prevention and control in Abia, with emphasis on proactive measures that address the sources of mosquito transmission and protect residents from malaria-related risks.
