Abia State Government Intensifies Breast Cancer Awareness, Encourages Women to Embrace Regular Screening
The Abia State Government has intensified efforts to promote women’s health and combat breast cancer through increased public awareness, preventive healthcare education and encouragement of regular medical screening for early detection.
As part of this commitment, an awareness event to commemorate World Breast Cancer Awareness Month was recently organised by the Office of the Wife of the Governor, in collaboration with relevant organisations and the Ministries of Health, Women Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, November 2, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti at Government House, Umuahia.
He explained that the initiative was designed to deepen public understanding of breast cancer, educate women on the importance of preventive health practices and encourage routine medical examinations as a critical step towards detecting the disease at its earliest stages.
The programme also underscores the importance of collective action in addressing breast cancer, particularly through community sensitisation, access to reliable health information and the promotion of healthier lifestyles.
Early detection remains one of the most effective ways of improving breast cancer treatment outcomes, making regular screening and prompt medical attention essential in reducing the risks associated with late diagnosis.
The initiative further reflects the Abia State Government’s commitment to strengthening preventive healthcare, improving health awareness and advancing the well-being of women across the state under the administration of Governor
Alex Otti.
